Final Task

This project has been an incredible experience, both in successes and failures. I'm not afraid to admit there are some things I could have done better, but I still believe the product I produced was something I can be proud of. I can't wait to go into Media Studies next year and see where it takes me. Thanks for taking this journey with me.

Boo! Genre Research: Conventions of Horror

Image
Camera Angles/Movements:   In horror films, there tends to be Dutch angles to create discomfort . Wide shots and long shots are rarely used as they tend to mainly be used for tracking shots. Handheld and closeup shots ca n be used to emphasize a character’s point of view or emotions/reactions.   Mise- en -scene:     Lighting: Lighting tends to be dark, which adds to the scary atmosphere. Usually lots of light is pointed to a face, murder weapon, or various sorts of scary imagery.   Settings: Settings can vary, depending on the story being told. In more isolated settings, protagonists are alone and fending for themselves(example?) . In settings where more people are present, characters often must work together to defeat the antagonist, which c an create tension between them.   Costumes: Actors who play antagonists are often made to look less human or entirely monstrous . Examples include wearing masks or wearing makeup to be perceived as an entirely inh...

The Ultimate Genre Decision

Image
We’ve decided to defy conventions by making our film a horror-comedy . While it may be easier and safer to stick to one genre, it wouldn’t be true to the story we are trying to tell with our film. We found through our research that thriller wouldn’t suit our film as well as horror does. Thriller movies focus on tension, which can be easily broken with a misplaced joke. In addition, thrillers don't allow the freedom we want to lean into fear. We chose comedy because our pitch works perfectly with this lighthearted and jovial genre. We plan for the cast to tell jokes throughout the film to counter the fear from our horror elements. To diversify our camera angles, comedic inserts would provide a brief reprieve from the horror , the change of angles likely causing an increased impact in the jokes. Another point on the side of comedy, it is perfect for endings. We want audiences to associate our film with a happy memory, not a fearful one like most horror movies. Even more, comedy f...

Our Pitch

Image
The First Pitch : Tiny person lost in the backyard. The Second Pitch : Women learns to love programming despite misogyny. The Third Pitch : Ballsy kids get lost in the woods and slowly get scared by creepy happenings.   Out of the three of these we chose the third pitc h.   It would be the cheapest, the easiest, and has plenty of room in case there is the off-chance we can’t meet up as often as we wish. All woods can look the same, so we can create the appearance that we are in the same place, even if we aren’t. One of us is still a little upset about the fact that the second pitch is too difficult, but the third pitch is a good mix of simple and creative, which is exactly what we need for this class .
