Improvisation in Production

Last Sunday, the 6th, I filmed the third page of my storyboard with Clarita and Sofia, my now only actors. I decided to take myself out of the acting because of my lack of skill in it and so I could focus more on the other aspects of the project. I found myself a lot more confident behind the camera during filming, even taking better charge. This also greatly improved time management and complications regarding someone holding the camera but not understanding the angles or shots I'm looking for. I planned to film from 12 to 1:30pm, finishing 6 scenes. This was based off the previous filming session where we finished 8 scenes in about two hours. I wanted to be absolutely sure we would get all necessary scenes filmed, but it turns out I didn't need to worry as we finished at around 1:05pm, 25 minutes ahead of schedule. The saved time could also be attributed to less interruptions. The main filming location is on a disc golf course, so intermittent interruptions from disc golf players is expected. However, on the day of filming there were only two or three interruptions. I assume this was due to the time of day. Filming earlier in the future will certainly be a consideration when the dates arise. This filming session was also Sofia's first day on set, so we had an introduction period. Sofia and Clarita got along well, and both actors are friends of mine so the communication and cooperation were great. Before the filming I had a somewhat loose understanding of the costumes I wanted for the Demon and Survivor characters. Allowing Sofia, a fashion student and makeup artist, a lot of creative freedom was a major success, as the costume she came in fit perfectly. Sofia also helped with the costume of the Survivor and one of the scenes. The costume of the Survivor was originally a black long sleeve jacket and long dark jeans. With tips from Sofia, I added a black beanie, not only to differentiate the Survivor from the Demon, but to add depth to the character. The Survivor is meant to be a little secretive and closed off, protective of her personal details, and a beanie would cover up some aspect of herself like she's trying to do. The shot I slightly changed was of the Demon running after the Kid. Initially, the Demon would be sprinting after the Kid, growling and grinning. The updated version has slowed the Demon to a menacing speed-walk and bearing a grave expression. The Demon has transitioned from a mindless monster to a predator stalking prey, something much scarier.
