The song we are doing is We Belong Together by Ritchie Valens. This song falls in the 50s era of blues-rock.

  • - These songs are typically slower and more personal. Fewer instruments are used, and the songs tend to bring the audience down instead of up.

  • - The edits in these videos have little variety, using almost entirely action-match shots and jump cuts. Additionally, panning back and forth is common in this style.

  • - The numerous props in these music videos consist mostly of musical equipment such as drum sets and speakers.

  • - Usually in the past actors in these videos would wear suits and other formal wear with coiffed hair. This gave the actors a professional and attractive look.

Conventions and Codes:

  1. 1. Considering the times, being in the 50’s, these music videos were mostly in black and white due to the filming equipment. This gives the songs a vintage feel, as well as a more muted mood.

  1. 2. Majority of the lead singers in these songs and videos are male. This is another product of the time period, as the bias against women in this field was strong so female artists were not as supported.

  1. 3. The singers in these videos sing with more moody tones as to appeal to the audience’s emotions. The facial expressions play a large role in conveying emotion to the audience as there were mainly live audiences who were able to receive emotional messages more clearly.
